How does Actos compare to Avandia?

For those that have non-insulin dependent diabetes, Actos or Avandia may be one of the medications the doctor prescribes. Both of these medications are part of the group of medications called thiazolidinediones. These medications help regulate insulin in the blood by increasing sensitivity to insulin while reducing the amount of insulin circulating in the blood.

In Combination with Other Diabetes Treatments

While they are in the same group of medications, there are some differences between the medications. First, Actos can be used with insulin and other medications. Avandia, on the other hand, is not for use with insulin. Both medications can cause hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia in combination with other diabetes medications.

Drug Interactions

Both Actos and Avandia have drug interactions that can be potentially harmful. Among other drugs, Actos can have negative interactions with digoxin, gemfibrozil, morphine, NSAIDs, seizure medications, rifampin, bosentan, delavirdine, and tolbutamide. Avandia interacts with drugs such as gemfibrozil, rifampin, and nitrate drugs for heart conditions.

Side Effects

Actos can cause serious side effects such as chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, dark urine, clay-colored stools, blurred vision, frequent urination, and pale skin with easy bruising. Avandia's list of serious side effects is almost the same as Actos' list with the addition of jaundice.

Both drugs are not for use by people with severe heart issues such as congestive heart failure. Both medications can elevate the amount of fluid retention. That fluid retention can cause more problems with the heart. Avandia appears to cause both cardiac arrest and heart failure. Actos only appears to increase the rate of heart failure.

Recently, the FDA has put out a caution that Actos appears to increase the risk of bladder cancer.

Medical Conditions for Caution

With Avandia, the patient needs to use caution with this medication with conditions like congestive heart failure, heart disease, liver disease, or eye problems related to diabetes. With Actos, the patient needs to use caution with this medication with conditions like congestive heart condition, heart disease, liver disease, or fluid retention.
